When Mark first came to FaithActs, he was already in Primary 5, yet he could barely read and write. He shared with us how his teacher would leave him in a corner facing away from her during class and left him to do his own things as he was not par with his classmates academically. That really broke the hearts of our staff and volunteers.
Having been teased by his peers and called names like “stupid and slow” all his life, he was also very shy and self conscious. As a result, he would enter our Youth Hub only when he was accompanied by his parent or one of our staff. Otherwise, he would just stand outside or hide in a corner until someone attended to him.
Having hardly received any education themselves, there was little that his parents could do to help him. They also could not afford to engage private tutors or specialist help for him. Thus, they came to FaithActs for help.
Mark joined our tuition programme and the Faithacts staff contacted his school teachers to find out what else could be done to help him cope better in school. Due to his poor foundation in English, we were forced to start him off on the very basic using K1 and K2 workbooks in our tuition sessions.
Within a year, we were delighted to see that he has progressed to P2 and P3 workbooks. In addition, he has also gained confidence in relating to people and would not shy or hide away from people like before.
Mark and his family are just one of the many families that we have helped and served in the last year. Indeed, we hope to continue making a positive impact in children and youths like Mark, thus helping to maximize their potential and improving their chances of carving out a livelihood for themselves and their families in the future.
