Testimony of Student J
FaithActs is a strong pillar of support to me and my family for the last 10 years.
As the youngest child and only son in my family, my mother had high hope on me to do well academically. Throughout my studies, I received much help from my schools’ teachers and friends. Since young, I was diagnosed with dyslexic spectrum where I have difficulties with languages. I was elated when I got into my desired school to pursue a diploma course amid overcoming tough times and challenges during my course of study.
My affiliation to FaithActs stemmed from receiving educational support throughout my secondary school and was a scholarship recipient in polytechnic. I am given a printer and a laptop during my course of study in engineering. Currently, I am serving NS and the allowance allow me to give dinner treats to my mum and sisters.
Last year, I had the chance to volunteer at FaithActs Honours Night event for bursary and scholarship recipient. I also get to serve refreshments to the guests. I hope to show my appreciation to the support from the staff and the care that is showered to my family. From supporting us financially and reaching out to my mother who is overwhelmed emotionally as the care giver to my sister who suffers from impairment.
These words have been a source of encouragement for me as a social worker and I would like to share them with others…
“I know you are trying to help me as much as possible which I'm thankful but I wanted to deal with this issue myself. Although I am not financially stable as I'm still a student, but as I get older I need to manage it myself and be independent. I know you trying to help me with funds but I feel bad as I don't deserve it and you've been helping my family over the years
Thank you, Jean for understanding. I will always pray and see where God takes me to do in my life. Thank you for taking good care of my family, really appreciate it”
Student J family are the recipients of SPIN (Single Parent-In-Need) programme.
Testimony of Student C
FaithActs has been supporting my elder sister and me for our educational needs throughout our secondary school life. She is currently in University while I am taking business studies in polytechnic.
In 2015, my father suffered a stroke and our family cared for him at home. It was an immense relief that FaithActs reached out to us then, providing us with much needed support, not only financially but also emotionally. My mother’s health was also badly affected as she was the main caregiver and also breadwinner of the family. My father’s condition deteriorated further and after another stroke and had to be care for at a nursing home.
Knowing fully of my family situation, I studied hard for my exams and did well for my “O” levels. Sadly, he passed away on Easter day in 2022. Over the years, I realised my mum’s health has suffered and she has to grapple with overcoming her emotions during those tough times.
My sister and I did part-time work during the school holidays to support the family needs. Major expenses include educational needs, food, transportation, medical insurance and medical expenses for the 3 of us.
I have since matured from a teenager to value meaningful engagement with my family and we treasure our closer bond. I make the time to spend with my mum and sister however tired I maybe after a long day at school.
Sharing by Student C to FaithActs’ social worker regarding his the “highs and lows” of life in poly:
“There is lesser help in poly and requires a lot more initiative to do well. The lecturers that taught me are committed and always eager to help. To that, I am grateful to have their support and guidance during my time as a student. I am thankful that I score all As in this term”.
